US News & World Report began publishing its hospital rankings in 1990 as “America's Best Hospitals” to identify medical centers across various specialties that best serve patients whose illnesses pose unusual challenges due to underlying conditions, difficult procedures, advanced age, or other risky medical issues. For the rankings, hospitals are evaluated in 15 specialties. In 12 of the 15 specialties, rankings are determined by extensive data-driven analysis that combines performance measurements in three key aspects of healthcare: structure, process, and outcomes. In the other three specialties, rankings rely solely on expert opinion. Nearly 4,500 hospitals were evaluated this year.
U.S. News & World Report first released its Best Regional Hospitals in 2011. Rankings of regional hospitals within a state or metropolitan area are determined by a hospital's performance in a national adult specialty care rankings analysis and scores across procedure and medical condition areas.
