The Rector of Africa’s premier marriage education institute, College of Marital Success, Pastor Bisi Adewale, preaches that financial literacy and a healthy lifestyle are the panacea for happy families and successful marriages.
In a presentation released by the Ogun State Government on Saturday, Adewale stressed the importance of these two elements in making a marriage successful, especially at a time of economic recession.
He stated this at the inauguration of a former Surveyor General and Permanent Secretary in the Ogun State Civil Service, President and Member of the Institute of Surveyors of Nigeria, Mrs. Aderonke Adeyokunnu, and Patron of the association, Mr. Banji Akinhanmi.
The two were inducted at the second public lecture of the Surveyors Wives Association of Nigeria titled: “Family Survival Especially in Recession”, held at the NIS Multipurpose Hall, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, the state capital.
Adewale stressed that couples need to focus on several key areas to ensure the durability and happiness of their marriages, especially in today's tough economic climate.
“Couples must develop financial literacy by learning how to manage and earn money outside of their salary,” Adewale argues.
He stressed that understanding and effective management of money is crucial to a stable marriage, and suggested that couples should adjust their lifestyle within their means rather than stretching themselves beyond their means.
Aside from financial acumen, Adewale noted the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
“Take time to rest and try to stay healthy by eating and drinking right,” he advised.
According to him, good health not only enhances individual happiness but also strengthens marital bonds.
Adewale also spoke about the need to build strong and united marriages.
“Building strong, united marriages is essential,” he said, noting that united partnerships support resilience in difficult times.
He stressed that couples must understand the role of money in their relationship and manage their finances wisely to avoid unnecessary tension.
“By integrating these habits — financial management, health maintenance and marital bonding — couples can navigate the complexities of today's economic climate and build rewarding, lasting marriages,” he said.
Chairman, Ogun State chapter of SWAN, Mr Oluwakemi Oluwafemi, in his welcome address, appealed to women to see themselves as the oil that keeps the engine of their families running, especially in the current global economic climate.
“Certainly couples, including their children, need to strategically plan how to make things work within the resources available to them and cut budgets down to their own pockets,” she said.
