Located in Australia's tropical north, Brisbane often finds itself in the shadow of its more cosmopolitan southern cities of Sydney and Melbourne.
But that's likely to change with the Queensland capital being crowned host of the 2032 Olympic Games, and despite the Paris Games only just finishing, the city is already busy putting on the glamour.
A new entertainment and lifestyle precinct called Queens Wharf is hoping to change that, with its flagship mixed-use development, The Star, due to open on August 29 after a multi-year renovation, according to Queensland Tourism and Events.
The complex will include a five-star hotel, several restaurants, a casino and a Skydeck that will rise 100 metres above the city and offer spectacular views over Queen's Wharf and the Brisbane River. It will be open to the public 24 hours a day.
Once the new 40,000 square metre precinct is fully open, it is expected to attract an additional 1.4 million tourists each year. Queens Wharf will also feature a host of new hotels and restaurants, as well as a range of entertainment and retail options.
