Mark Zuckerberg, the tech titan behind Meta, is one of the richest people in the world with a net worth of roughly $183 billion. His wealth fuels a variety of passions, from investing in real estate in Hawaii to his philanthropic work with his wife Priscilla Chan.
Zuckerberg is known for his relatively modest car interests, driving cars such as an Acura TSX and a Honda Fit, but he does make some more extravagant purchases. For example, he bought a Volkswagen Golf GTI after amassing his fortune, a car with a modest starting price of just over $30,000. But he's also splurged on a Pagani Huayra, a luxury sports car with a price tag of over $1 million. In a rare public reveal of his collection, Zuckerberg shared a photo of two restored vintage Ford Broncos, captioning them “his and hers,” though the prices remain private.
Zuckerberg's real estate portfolio is equally impressive: In 2011, he bought a 5,000-square-foot home in Palo Alto for $7 million, then added four adjacent properties for $43 million for extra privacy. He also bought a $10 million mansion in San Francisco that he sold for $31 million in 2022, making it the city's largest residential deal at the time.
In 2014, Zuckerberg expanded his real estate business to Hawaii, purchasing two sprawling properties on the island of Kauai for $100 million. However, his actions were controversial among locals, especially after he built a six-foot wall around the land and filed a lawsuit against a Hawaiian family who claimed ownership. Though he later dropped the lawsuit, the backlash was huge, with some accusing him of “neo-colonialism.” Despite the criticism, Zuckerberg continued to expand his Hawaiian real estate, purchasing about 600 additional acres in 2021 for $53 million and another 110 acres in 2022 for $17 million. His Kauai property is said to have a 5,000-square-foot underground shelter with blast-proof doors and escape hatches.
Besides his real estate interests, Zuckerberg enjoys outdoor activities such as riding a $12,000 hydrofoil and practicing archery on his Hawaiian property. He's also an active mixed martial arts and jiu-jitsu enthusiast, even installing an octagonal training cage in his backyard.
In addition to activism, Zuckerberg has given a large amount of money to philanthropic efforts. He and Chan are members of the Giving Pledge, which has committed to donating the majority of their assets to charity. As part of this pledge, Zuckerberg committed to selling 99% of his Facebook shares over his lifetime. In September 2017, he announced plans to sell up to 75 million shares to fund the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI), a philanthropic organization he founded in 2015. CZI focuses on addressing global challenges, including eradicating disease, improving education, and addressing community needs. To date, CZI has awarded more than $6.91 billion in grants, including significant donations to criminal justice reform, affordable housing, and COVID-19 relief efforts.
One of the couple's most ambitious goals is to cure all diseases around the world by the end of the century. To achieve this goal, they founded Biohub, a nonprofit organization dedicated to groundbreaking research in genomics, infectious diseases and advanced medical devices.
In a light display of his wealth, Mr Zuckerberg recently commissioned a 7-foot-tall turquoise statue of Ms Chan inspired by ancient Roman traditions. He shared the statue on Instagram, humorously noting that he was “reviving the Roman tradition of making statues of my wife.”
