GOOSE CREEK, S.C. (WCSC) – The Goose Creek Fire Department is the first in the state and third in the country to get a new state-of-the-art medical device.
The Lifepak 35 monitor and defibrillator enables emergency departments to provide faster and more efficient life-saving treatment to patients experiencing cardiac emergencies. The new device has just been launched in the US by Stryker Corporation.
Throughout the week, Stryker leaders have been training the police department on how to use the device, and it will be officially rolled out on Thursday, allowing the department to update all of its equipment with the new technology.

The new Lifepak 35 monitors feature digital touch screens and clinically advanced therapy features to help save the lives of patients with cardiac issues. They essentially provide the functionality of a hospital-provided AED and defibrillator, providing comprehensive cardiac care to patients. These monitors replace devices the department has been using for 12 years.
The new machine will improve patient survival rates and the analytics built into the machine will enable the cardiac department to track patient data and understand the quality of cardiac care.
It's taken three years to get to this point, and with the support of the Mayor, City Council and City Administration, we were able to secure the funds to purchase the new machines.
Adrian Taylor, assistant chief of EMS operations for the Goose Creek Fire Department, said being able to track the data is crucial and will help the department reach the American Heart Association's “gold standard” when it comes to cardiac care.

“We made this purchase for the long term benefit of our residents, and with the technology that's built into these machines and the ability to bring this technology to the city, we're really looking forward to analyzing the data and seeing how well our cardiac care is performing and knowing that data will help us know that we're really providing the best possible care to the residents of the City of Goose Creek.”
Taylor said because the machines are upgradeable, they're a long-term investment for the citizens they serve, and he's excited to see the impact the new equipment will have.
“We're providing the residents of the City of Goose Creek and the surrounding areas with the latest technology and algorithms in cardiac emergency care, and these monitors can also be upgraded based on usage, so this is a long-term investment for the Goose Creek Fire Department and the residents of the City of Goose Creek to not only take advantage of this state-of-the-art platform, but to extend the life of this platform into the future,” Taylor said.
Taylor said they will complete training on the new equipment Thursday afternoon and once that is done, the equipment will be loaded onto the truck and ready to go. The old equipment will remain in place to ensure the transition is smooth, but Taylor said he is excited to see the benefits this will bring to both the fire department and the community.
