On Thursday, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump sued CBS for airing an interview with his political opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris. The meeting with Democrats running for president took place in early October.
According to President Trump, the interview was “fabricated” and misleading to the recipient. The lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court for Northern Texas. According to the document, President Trump is demanding a jury trial and at least $10 billion (more than 40 billion zlotys) in damages.
US elections. Donald Trump sues CBS over interview with Kamala Harris
In a traditional pre-election interview on a special edition of the CBS show, Harris was asked, among other questions: She thinks about what will happen if the Kiev authorities' success ends the war with Russia. “Ending the war without the participation of Ukraine and the UN Charter will not be successful,” she replied. Asked if she would meet with President Vladimir Putin to negotiate a diplomatic solution to the conflict, she said no.
– Without Ukraine, I would never have met bilaterally. Ukraine must have a say in its future, she stressed. In her opinion, the Republican candidate's vaunted plan to end the war would mean Ukraine's surrender. At the same time, the Democratic candidate refused to give a clear answer when asked if he supported expanding NATO to include Ukraine. – These are all issues that we deal with (…). At this time, we support Ukraine's ability to defend itself against Russia's unprovoked aggression. If Donald Trump became president, Putin would be sitting in Kiev right now, she added.
Donald Trump did not participate in the cult program. Now he's suing the station
Let's remember. Pre-election interviews with candidates of both parties on “60 Minutes,” a CBS current affairs program that features current events, have been an unbroken tradition dating back to 1968. But this time, President Trump canceled the plan. He decided to appear on the show because of the TV's intention to check whether his statements were true.
Instead of an interview with Trump, the station aired material about Republican officials in Arizona who were being threatened by the former president's supporters for refusing to confirm Trump's theories about a stolen election. For Harris, the CBS interview marked the beginning of a busy series of television appearances after a long period in which the candidate gave few media interviews.
The US presidential election will be held on November 5, 2024. The winner will replace incumbent Joe Biden, who declined to run for re-election in July.
