“I do not accept responsibility for the deaths of 14 people, as neither I nor those who work with me have any responsibility for this tragedy,” the minister said at a press conference. He said he was stepping down “for moral reasons, as a tragedy occurred in an area covered by his ministry.”
Regarding the reconstruction of the railway station in Novi Sad, the capital of Vojvodina autonomous region in northern Serbia, Besic said that as minister he had “never taken any decisions that could have affected the outcome of the project”. The politician was questioned by the public prosecutor's office in this city on Saturday.
Demonstration in Belgrade. They demanded the resignation of the highest levels of power
Demonstrators who staged protests in the wake of the tragedy demanded Besic's resignation. On Sunday, demonstrators in Belgrade stood in front of government headquarters and the Ministry of Construction, demanding that those responsible for the tragedy be held accountable. Their hands were painted red to symbolize the blood on the hands of those in power.
Opposition parties in Novi Sad also demanded the resignation of Serbian Prime Minister Miloš Vucevic and Mayor Milan Čurik, from the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), which also governs at the central level.
Serbia. The tragedy of Novi Sad. Injured people are fighting for their lives
The tragedy occurred on Friday afternoon. Novi Sad's station opened in July this year after a major renovation carried out by the Chinese consortium CRIC&CCCC (China Railway International and China Communications Construction Co., Ltd.).
Serbian Railways, the Chinese company and Minister Besic announced that the collapsed part of the roof was not included in the recent reconstruction works. However, recordings obtained by engineers involved in the station's renovation and by Serbian media contradict these claims. It is not yet known what caused the railway station's concrete roof to collapse.
The hospital where the three people injured in the accident were admitted said on Monday that their condition remained very serious.
