A Polish independence party candidate in the Icelandic parliamentary elections is wanted by Polish police on suspicion of financial fraud. After this information was revealed in the media, he withdrew his candidacy.
The matter of Kristofer G. Kristinusson was reported by Iceland's public television RUV. Journalists received information that a politician from the ruling center-right Independence Party had previously been listed in the population register as Krzysztof Gajowski.
It has been revealed that a man with such personal information is wanted by the police in Gryfino, West Pomerania. Polish authorities issued an arrest warrant for Gajowski and requested his extradition, but Iceland refused the extradition.

In an interview with the RUV editorial office, Krzysztof Gajowski explained that there are legal issues related to the company he ran nearly 30 years ago. He was then said to have had such financial problems that he went bankrupt and the case ended up in court. The man stressed that he considered himself innocent, a belief backed up by the decision of Icelandic authorities not to agree to extradition.

Representatives of the Independence Party also spoke out on the issue, saying they knew nothing about Gajowski's problems in Poland. At the same time, it added that the candidates themselves had declined to participate in the election.
“It has now become clear that he does not meet the requirements to sit in Parliament,” the statement said.
Iceland will hold early parliamentary elections on November 30th.
