On Friday, Minister of Justice Adam Bodnar, together with Interior Minister Tomasz Siemoniak and Infrastructure Minister Dariusz Klimczak, announced a series of road transport reforms. As Mr. Bodnar highlighted, interagency work in this area had been ongoing for two months.
Fight against road pirates. The government is preparing to amend the law
As reported by Adam Bodnar, the changes refer to both the Criminal Code, Misdemeanor Act and Road Traffic Act. “We want to introduce tougher penalties for drivers who drive despite a driving ban,” Justice Minister Adam Bodnar said at a press conference. He said: “If someone breaks this ban, we want them to have their driving privileges revoked for life.” The main changes the government is proposing include:
The following severe penalties apply to perpetrators who drive after receiving a court restraining order: Lifelong driving ban and extended vehicle confiscation rules. If the driver had a blood alcohol level between 0.5 and 1.5 per mil or was prohibited from driving, the perpetrator was prohibited from driving at the time of the incident, or had an alcohol level of at least 1.5 per mil. In such cases, the possibility of the prison sentence being suspended will be limited. Driving bans per blood alcohol level per mile cannot be duplicated.
Siemoniak said a new type of crime would then be introduced, namely organizing and participating in illegal car racing, as well as new crimes. Drift. Penalties for extremely dangerous (reckless) driving will also be increased. The government will also increase penalties for fatal accidents (illegal racing, extremely dangerous, reckless driving, or violation of driving bans). He added that any violation of the driving ban will result in a mandatory and lifetime driving ban.
Mr. Klimchak then continued the discussion by speaking about the proposed law reform. The government wants to introduce a trial period for young drivers. These include additional training, lower speed limits and zero alcohol limits.
– These changes can certainly be summed up in one slogan: “Stopping road banditry”. We must do everything in our power to prevent the Polish state from holding itself responsible for the deaths that follow. Bodnar previously told TOK FM radio that there was no doubt that harsher penalties would be imposed. – A new type of so-called traffic accident. This includes certain situations such as significantly exceeding the speed limit or driving a vehicle while disqualified from driving, which can result in death under separate penalties. He emphasized that it would be a separate crime.
More details will be provided soon.
