Approximately 43 million people are under emergency alerts in eight states in the northeastern United States. This situation is due to continued drought, which continues to pose a severe fire threat.
Forecasters have warned that air humidity is around 20% lower and wind gusts of up to 70km/h will only accelerate the spread of the fire.
According to ABC News, this situation will continue for another week. No measurable precipitation is expected in the warning area over the next few days. This is expected to result in an increase in moderate to extreme drought.
Drought in America. New York authorities urge people to conserve water
NBC New York reported that New York officials are concerned about declining water levels in the reservoir. This was due to several months of low rainfall. Mayor Eric Adams issued a drought warning in November, urging city residents to conserve water by taking shorter showers and fixing leaky faucets.
– Overall, we're concerned about the system… New York City's system is currently 63% efficient. Typically around 79%. But inflows into the reservoir system are near record lows, said Paul Rush, the city's Department of Environmental Protection official. He added that the system urgently needs “a lot of rain.”
US warns. tank is more than half empty
The drought occurred as an aqueduct in the northern part of the state was temporarily closed for renovation work. The Delaware Aqueduct, which normally supplies more than half of the city's water, was drained as part of a $2 billion project to address leaks, the television station explained.
“Given the current very dry conditions, there is a possibility that we may pause work and reopen the aqueduct in order to restore full access to the entire water supply,” Rush said.
As American media points out, this bad situation is not just related to this reservoir. The water level at Schoharie Reservoir was less than one-third of its capacity this week. A similar situation was observed at Ashokan Reservoir in the Catskill Mountains.
