Two border crossings have been reopened in Saxony, on the border between Poland and Germany. According to German media reports, German federal police have dismantled office containers at the official border crossings Friedenstrasse and B178 in Zittau.
Local Mayor Stephen Meyer commented on the matter, describing it as a “tactical” approach. – This will allow (Federal Police Edition) to act more flexibly. In a recording posted online, he said that they no longer operate solely based on fixed checkpoints, but ensure a flexible presence within the region depending on the situation.
– I would like to clearly emphasize that the issues of security and the restriction of illegal immigration remain important to us. He stressed that he will continue to maintain close contact with the federal police.
He said police would become more “agile” and testing more “secret.” German media added that the change was introduced because the system was becoming ineffective. MDR Fernsehen recently reported that no illegal migrant smugglers were caught at either of these two border crossings.
Control of the Polish-German border. Berlin explains the decision, Tusk thunders, calling it “unacceptable”
In September this year, Germany introduced restrictions on all land borders. They had already announced then that enhanced testing would continue for at least six months. They were aimed, among other things: To combat transnational crime. Germany's Interior Ministry said at the time that the reason for the order was the need to limit illegal immigration and protect internal security.
The decision prompted criticism from some EU member states, including Poland. Donald Tusk said the measures were “unacceptable”. The Prime Minister said this was effectively a “shutdown of the Schengen area”.
However, restrictions on the German-Polish border had already been in force since October 2023. Temporary restrictions were then introduced on borders with Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria and Switzerland.
When implementing the regulations, German authorities ensured that only those who presented invalid or forged documents, or who did not have the appropriate visa or residence permit, would be refused entry to Germany.
