As Iltalehti points out, the AIS system on the Chinese cargo ship Yi Peng 3 was responsible, among other things, for transmitting the location of troops.
The outage lasted until 10:41 p.m. Sunday. The ship was then in an area where a cable connecting Finland and Germany was damaged. The newspaper said the cable failed less than four hours after the Chinese ship's AIS system started responding again.
