Georgia will not attempt to negotiate membership in the European Union for the next four years. The country's prime minister has suspended negotiations and announced that he does not want to receive subsidies from the EU. Recently, relations between the authorities in Tbilisi and Brussels have deteriorated significantly: Because he had doubts about the results of the Georgian parliamentary elections.
Georgia has suspended talks with the European Union about joining the organization until 2028, local Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said, Reuters reported. He added that the government has decided not to include this topic on the agenda for the next four years. Georgia's prime minister also stressed that he would reject subsidies from the EU budget.
Georgia does not want to join the EU. The reason is the deterioration of relations with Brussels.
Kovatidze stressed that by the end of 2028 Georgia will be “economically ready to start EU accession negotiations, and it will be so in 2030,” News Georgia reported. Government leaders said that at this stage the start of EU accession negotiations was being “used as a means of blackmailing their countries, and this is unacceptable.” He stressed that it is equally unacceptable to view integration with the European Union as a “mercy”.
The decision comes shortly after the European Parliament called on the European Union to impose sanctions on Georgia's prime minister and others in a non-binding resolution on Thursday. He also rejected the results of Georgia's October legislative elections and called for another election within a year.

Later, lawmakers also accused Russia of interfering in Georgia's election process. They warned that any attempt by Georgian authorities to ban political parties would further isolate the country and impede Georgia's application to join the EU.
In the EP's opinion, Georgia's elections were neither free nor fair. As a result, Georgia is moving away from the democratic path of the rule of law, and the country's ruling Georgian Dream party is to blame for this.
