Up to 147 people may have died from a mysterious disease spreading in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Doctors have already discovered around 400 infected people, and the number of cases is increasing day by day. WHO dispatched experts to the area.
An unknown disease with influenza-like symptoms has broken out in the southwestern Democratic Republic of the Congo. In Kwango Region's Panzi Health Zone, 394 cases have already been recorded.
Lieutenant Governor Remy Psaki told The Associated Press that between 67 and 147 people died from the disease in November. The exact number is not confirmed because not all deaths are immediately linked to infection. The first case was recorded in October.

Symptoms of the disease include fever, headache, cough, difficulty breathing, and weakness. Data from the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows more than 200 cases involve young people ranging in age from a few to a dozen years old.

Due to Panzi's location, symptoms are difficult to treat and prevent. The town is 700 km from Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and communication networks are very limited.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has sent experts to Panji to learn more about the disease and determine what exactly it is. The team includes epidemiologists, clinicians, laboratory technicians, and infectious disease experts.

Experts collect samples, analyze test results, and look for the source of infection. It also plans to provide medicines and diagnostic kits.
