As the Austrian president recalled, one of his most important constitutional tasks is to provide the country with a functioning federal government. He justified entrusting the task of forming a government to Herbert Kickel due to the new situation emerging in the local political scene.

Alexander van der Bellen pointed out that previously leaders of other groups had categorically ruled out cooperation with FPOe leaders. Karl Nehammer, the current Austrian chancellor and former leader of the OeVP formation, attempted to form a three-party coalition with the SPOe and NEOS.
– As we know, these negotiations failed. Nehammer announced his resignation and OeVP withdrew its opposition to Kickel. This is a new situation, the head of state added.

Van der Bellen also stressed that the purpose of Monday’s meeting was to determine whether there is a real chance of forming a majority government in the current circumstances. “My constitutional mandate is to consider the possibility of forming a government where the (editor-in-chief’s) share in parliament exceeds 50 percent,” he said.
He also said his conversations with Kickel discussed various scenarios. The president entrusted van der Bellen with the task of forming a federal government with the OeVP party, as the FPOe leader was to assure van der Bellen that a functioning government could be formed. “Respecting the will of the voters requires that it be reflected in the form of government,” the president explained.

After the meeting with Van der Bellen at the Hofburg Palace, Kickle did not wish to speak to journalists and did not comment in any way on the conversation. He simply said he had no plans to speak. Afterward, when asked by reporters whether his conversation with the president went well, he answered, “It’s always good to talk to the president.”
Austria. The post-election stalemate will come to an end. Herbert Kickle received the commission.
Herbert Kickl has been President of FPOe since 2021. Because of his pro-Russian views and nationalist declarations, leaders of other political parties pledged not to form a coalition with this formation if their leader became prime minister. They emphasized that politicians also want to limit the role of women in public life.
FPOe won the election with 28.8%. vote. In second place was the former ruling party OeVP (26.3%), followed by the SPOe (21.1%), the liberal NEOS (New Austrian Freedom Forum; 9.2%), and the Green Party (8.3%). Nehammer announced on Saturday that he would resign as head of government and OeVP chairman after negotiations to form a coalition without the FPOe failed.
Despite the Libertarians’ victory, President Van der Bellen initially entrusted the current Prime Minister with the task of forming a new government. He explained this decision by the fact that the Christian Democrats and the Social Democrats had clearly ruled out participation in a cabinet led by the FPOe leader.
