Brazilian authorities announced in a statement on Monday that Indonesia has officially joined the BRICS group as a full member. Brazil is the leader in the bloc of countries in the 2025 presidential term.
Indonesia, the world’s fourth most populous country, has previously expressed interest in joining the organization. The country, located in Southeast Asia, received permission to join two years ago, but the authorities postponed this decision until the end of last year’s elections. “Indonesia, together with other members of the group, supports the idea of reforming international institutions and contributes to the deepening of cooperation in the countries of the Southern World,” said the statement of the Brazilian authorities. Brazil will hold the presidency of this union until the end of 2025.

The term BRICS comes from the first letters of the English names of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The last meeting of the heads of the European Union was held in October 2024 in Kazan, Russia.
