Local media reported the summons of Ambassador Sergei Kopilkin. As explained, the case concerns, among other things, a television report broadcast a few days ago criticizing the actions of the Yerevan authorities in the context of future accession to the European Union.
“According to the Armenian authorities, one of the reports contained artificially generated statements aimed at the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Armenia,” the statement said.
Earlier, Russian Foreign Ministry Secretary Sergey Lavrov commented on the Armenian government’s policies. Kremlin diplomats said Yerevan’s desire to join the European Community would have geopolitical implications.
Tensions between Russia and Armenia
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk commented on the possibility of Armenia joining the European Union. The politician warned the Yerevan government not to make hasty decisions.
– Moscow views Yerevan’s decision to begin the process of joining the European Union as the beginning of its withdrawal from the Eurasian Economic Union, he stressed.
At the same time, the Deputy Prime Minister asserted that the actions of the Armenian authorities are having a negative impact on cooperation with Russia.
“We have confirmed that economic activity is starting to slow down in many areas,” he said.
