Mette Frederiksen, head of the Danish government, spoke by phone with Donald Trump. This is a reaction to the US president-elect’s announcement that he will take over Greenland. During the exchange of positions, Denmark’s prime minister declared that Denmark was ready to take “even greater responsibility” for the island’s security.
“On Wednesday, the Danish Prime Minister had a 45-minute telephone conversation with US President-elect Donald Trump about strengthening security in Greenland and the Arctic,” Danish government leaders announced in a statement.
As reported, in a conversation with the future US president, Fredriksen stressed that “Denmark is ready to take on even greater responsibilities in this field.”

The statement shows the prime minister echoing remarks made by Greenlandic Prime Minister Mute Egede to President Trump. The politician asserted that the island, currently dependent on Denmark, was not for sale and that Greenland would decide on its own independence.
The Copenhagen government leaders also touched on the topic of Danish companies contributing to economic growth and job creation in the United States, he added.

Frederiksen assured President Trump that the EU and the US have a common interest in closer trade.
As it became clear, the conversation also concerned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and relations with China.

In an interview with Danish public broadcaster DR, Frederiksen made it clear that the Copenhagen government is open to expanding the US military presence in Greenland.
The Prime Minister recalled the effectiveness of the 1951 U.S.-Denmark Agreement, which guaranteed direct U.S. access to the island.
– No one in Europe, including the United States or Denmark, wants Russia or any other country involved in Greenland, she noted.

Greenland is home to the U.S. Thule Air Base, which will be renamed Space Force Base in 2023.
This was Frederiksen’s first conversation with President Trump after the US president-elect said Greenland should be taken over. He did not rule out economic pressure on Denmark in the form of force or tariffs.
“Greenland is a wonderful place and the people who live there will benefit greatly if it becomes part of our country. We will nurture it and protect it from the evil outside world. Let’s make Greenland great again,” the president-elect wrote.
