The resolution won 51-48 votes as four Republicans joined Democrats, Susan Collins, Lisa Murkovsky, Rand Paul and Mitch McConnell.
The adopted documents aim to override the extraordinary conditions announced by Trump and allow 25% tariffs to be applied to goods from Canada.
The symbolic nature of voting
The official reason for introducing the duties was the desire to shorten fentanyl smuggling to the US, but a small portion of the drug’s proportions are smuggled from Canada to the US.
– The Senate has just adopted a bill aimed at liberalizingly liberating America from the Inflation Trump trade war with Canada, which will help fund tax cuts for billionaires, but the bill must pay families for it.
Voting has a major symbolic aspect. This is because similar votes are required at the House and President’s signatures to withstand exceptional conditions despite the adoption of solutions. The consent of Speaker Mike Johnson, who previously supported Trump’s commercial movement to file documents for the vote, once again praised the introduction of a new obligation the president called America’s “declaration of economic independence.”

Senators Collins and Murkovsky, who belong to the party’s moderate wing, come from the United States (Maine and Alaska) and rely heavily on trade with Canada, America’s greatest trading partner. McConnell has long been a Trump critic of supporters of free trade, but Paul is the party’s libertarian wing and is opposed to all tax increases.
On Wednesday, Trump pleaded with four people not to vote for the resolution. He suggested that the obligations he introduced would raise the prices of illegal drugs and “make him more expensive to distribute and sell.”

The Senate resolution is nothing more than a deception from Democrats who show and expose the weaknesses of some Republicans. So, as your president, I will not sign it because these four are not going anywhere, and the Chamber of Commerce won’t confirm it – I declared President.
