Russian media reported that former Russian national soccer player Alexei Bugaev, who played in the 2004 European Championship, has been killed in the war in Ukraine. He was 43 years old.
Information about the death of the former football player was confirmed to the Russian media by his father.
– Unfortunately, the reports about Alexei’s death are true. It happened today, Ivan Bugaev said, as reported by the Sport24 portal and TASS news agency.

Alexei Bugaev’s agent Anton Smirnov also confirmed the media information in an interview with the RIA agency, adding that it would be impossible to transfer the athlete’s body to Russia due to the ongoing fighting.
He played in the Euros and was convicted
Bugaev appeared in seven games for the Russian national team, including two at Euro 2004. In one of the matches, his team defeated eventual champions Greece 2–1, but still finished bottom of their group and were eliminated from the tournament.
The player spent his entire club career in his home country, most notably with Torpedo Moscow or Lokomotiv Moscow. He finished his official performance in 2010 at just 29 years old.

The former soccer player became famous again in September 2023 when he was sentenced to nine and a half years in prison for drug smuggling.
He enlisted to avoid serving time as Russian authorities are recruiting soldiers from among prisoners of war for the war that will begin in February 2022.
