In 1689, nobleman Jan Kazimierz Hauer published a book called “Sklad albo Skarbiec”, in which the relationship between his wife and children was described. You can read the entire text on the Wielkahistoria.pl website. Hauer's work became a written guide describing the behavior of the 17th century. It is difficult to call his ideas progressive, but they were part of the norms of the time. Haur did not recognize equality in the relationship. The author claimed that the host is “the boss and the master, and the host is just a helper or companion”. A woman was not allowed to oppose her husband, and “harmonious unity” was also required in marriage. The author also criticized the excessive use of carnal pleasures (even in marriage). He believed that the “use of Venus” would lead to a “weakening” of human nature and that addiction could lead to “sudden death”. The 17th century writer also believes that one should not show affection to children because it “diminishes the strength and seriousness of parents”. But the views that are controversial today corresponded to the spirit of the times and a strict approach to parenting.
