A few days ago, we talked about how much the number of kidney transplants in Poland has increased on TVN TV channel “Fakti”. It turns out that livers too, although this time not in Krakow, but in Warsaw. Banacha Street Hospital receives the largest number of donations from deceased donors in the world. More and more of the living, because the liver, although it exists, can be divided.
Mrs. Alicia Bugayska is one of the lucky people who received a new liver last year.
– I feel great. Even when I hear that the results are getting better day by day, it’s great – says Alicia Bugajska, a patient at the University Clinical Center in Warsaw.
This is really great, because in 2024, doctors at the University Clinical Center in Warsaw performed about 310 liver transplants. So many livers have never been transplanted in one year – not just here.
The largest such center in the world
– We can say with more than 99% certainty that we have become the world’s largest deceased donor liver transplant center. We never dreamed about it. (…) Two years ago we dreamed of 200 transplants. Now it is not 200, but more than 300, – says the professor. Michal Grat, national consultant in the field of clinical transplantation, head of the Department of General Surgery, Transplantation and Liver Surgery at the Medical University of Warsaw.

Of course, not only the quantity, but also the quality is considered.
– The most important thing is the result of the liver transplant. They are also very good, and the survival rate after transplantation exceeds 90 percent, which is observed in the best centers in the world, – emphasizes prof. Maciej Wojcicki, surgeon, transplantologist from the Clinical Center of the University of Warsaw.
Karolina Pitek-Schwitek from Poznań, Tereza Komorowska from the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship and Olena Riezanova from Ukraine, especially from Avdiivka, a town near Donetsk that was completely destroyed and occupied by the Russians, also recently received new livers at the University Clinic. .
– I am very happy, thank you to Poland, thank you to all the doctors for the opportunity to live – says Olena Rezanova.
The doctors had a hard time
So many livers were transplanted at the Warsaw hospital for several reasons. First, doctors can now successfully transplant those lower limbs that were previously rejected. In addition, they can divide a liver so that it is enough for two patients. Lately they are also doing transplants from living donors. In addition, they brought about 35 members from abroad.
– The stock exchange is mainly in Lithuania, but we were also in Germany, in Austria, in Bulgaria and even in Paris. Therefore, the whole of Europe is open and every year the opportunities are getting better and better – predicts Krzysztof Zajc, transplant coordinator from the University Clinical Center in Warsaw.
Therefore, there is an opportunity to increase the number of transplant plans this year and to increase the good work done here.
– I will not waste this gift and I thank the donor, I thank the hospital, the professors, and you can be sure that I will not waste this gift: I will do everything to bring new qualities to relationships and all false things. is ahead, says Karolina Pietek-Schwitek, Clinical Center of the University of Warsaw.
