On Monday, 41-year-old Sheriff Darrell was killed while repairing a dump truck at a construction site in Jackson, Mississippi. Hot asphalt rained down on the man.
Local Police Chief Joseph Wade said officers received a report of the accident in the morning. “It appears there was some type of vehicle failure,” Wade said.

The 41-year-old man was under the truck when the trunk lid opened and asphalt spilled onto him, according to the Associated Press.

– He was a good, hard-working, family man. “Our condolences go out to his family,” Wade said.
Police are investigating the matter, but everything points to it being an unfortunate accident.
