This course is intended for primary care physicians, endocrinologists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, registered dietitians, pharmacists, registered nurses, certified diabetes care and education specialists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, clinicians in training, certified health coaches, and other health professionals involved in the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases.
The type 2 diabetes epidemic is a growing national health emergency. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 38 million Americans, including an alarming number of children and teenagers, have diabetes, the majority of whom have type 2. Diagnosed diabetes now accounts for one-quarter of all health care dollars spent in the United States.
While many people with type 2 diabetes are reluctant to take lifelong medications, there is confusion about nutritional interventions for the disease, and most clinicians are not educated to effectively support lifestyle and dietary approaches.According to the 2022 ACLM Expert Consensus Statement, endorsed by the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE), supported by the Academy of Nutrition (AND), and co-sponsored by the Endocrine Society, it is possible to achieve remission of type 2 diabetes without drugs or procedures, primarily through diet.
“There is a growing recognition among physicians and health care professionals who treat people with type 2 diabetes that it may be possible to put type 2 diabetes into remission through diet alone,” said course lead instructor Kayli Anderson, MS, RDN, ACSM-EP, DipACLM, FACLM. “It is essential that education and training catch up with the science so clinicians can provide people with type 2 diabetes the care they want and deserve. ACLM's Diet for Type 2 Diabetes Remission course is an exciting step toward this goal.”
“Food as Medicine for Remission of Type 2 Diabetes” is one in a multi-part course series on food as medicine offered by ACLM. Session topics include nutrition for prevention and longevity, nutrition for treatment and risk reduction, calorie density, pre-conception, pregnancy, and postpartum.
For those interested in learning more about the role that intensive, evidence-based lifestyle medicine plays in achieving remission of type 2 diabetes, ACLM also offers the Certificate Course in Type 2 Diabetes Remission and Insulin Resistance Reversal, a comprehensive 18-hour continuing medical CME/CE course created by experts and researchers with a proven track record of using lifestyle medicine to treat people with type 2 diabetes. Upon completion of the course, qualified participants will receive a Type 2 Diabetes Remission Certificate.
