On Monday, representatives of the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs met in The Hague with ICC President Akne Tomoko, First Deputy Deputy Rosario Salvatore Aitala, and ICC Secretary General Osvaldo Zavala Guiller.
As stated in the statement summarizing the meeting, the main topic was the issue of cooperation between the International Criminal Court and the Armenian authorities and the Armenian justice system as a whole.
“Minister Mirzoyan emphasized Armenia's readiness to participate in international cooperation efforts aimed at ensuring compliance with international legal norms and the rule of law,” the statement said.
Cooperation between Armenia and the ICC. Will Yerevan stop Putin?
As added, the meeting also “discussed the status of efforts to improve national law in accordance with the provisions of the Rome Statute, in order to regulate the procedural aspects of cooperation with courts.”
Armenia's increased cooperation with the International Criminal Court in The Hague is a political blow to the Kremlin. If Moscow's once close ally wants to comply with the Hague tribunal's decision, it will be forced to detain President Vladimir Putin if he visits Yerevan or other Armenian cities.
The Russian leader is being charged in connection with a war crimes investigation in Ukraine that was launched on March 3, 2022 at the request of dozens of countries, including Poland. The application for the arrest warrant was filed on February 22 last year.
