Didn’t have time to see the Northern Lights on New Year’s Eve? Today there will be another opportunity for this. All over Poland, very good conditions are provided for observing this bright event. It is necessary to observe the sky in the evening.
Last year ended on an exceptional note for astronomy enthusiasts and 2025 will begin the same way, with an aurora spotted in the southern part of the country on Tuesday night into Wednesday, but it turns out that this was just a taste of the forecast for the day. What awaits us this evening.
Aurora over Poland. One more chance
Karol Wojcicki, a well-known astronomer and author of the “Head in the Stars” profile on social media, writes about the “dream conditions for observing the brilliant aurora borealis.” He adds that it is likely to be seen in most of Poland.
The best conditions for observing this phenomenon are outside the cities, where we are not disturbed by artificial light.
“Strange things happen,” Wojcicki wrote on social media.
If you manage to spot the northern lights, send your photos to Kontakt24.
As previously reported by Wojcicki, in the last few days, an exceptionally high activity was observed in the Sun. There were two mass crown explosions at the same time. These are huge clouds of highly magnetic plasma, which are released into the interplanetary space at a high speed and reach the Earth’s magnetosphere.
What is aurora borealis?
Aurora borealis is a light phenomenon that occurs when energetic gas particles hit the Earth’s atmosphere by the Sun at a high speed (up to 72 million kilometers per hour). The planet is protected from “attack” by its magnetic field. It directs particles towards the north and south poles, and the particles interact with the gases in our atmosphere.
Aurora occurs mainly in the north and south polar region. The scientific name is aurora borealis (near the north pole) and aurora australis (near the south pole). It comes from the name of the Roman goddess Aurora.
