The attack took place on Saturday before 4pm (local time). Cutter attacked near a market in the heart of Villach, the capital of Carinthia.
Austria. Cutter attack in the heart of Villach
Police reported that the detainees were legally Syrians in Austria and had no criminal history. Media reports that the attackers can try to stop the 43-year-old food supplier who was witnessing the attack. He probably prevented the attacks of people afterwards.
It is not certain whether the 23-year-old is acting alone or with other people. That’s why it includes a wide range of services that are also involved in police helicopters and Cobra Special Groups.
As a result of the incident, four people were injured – two seriously, two are easy – and the 14-year-old’s illness died. All victims are Austrian citizens.
In connection with the event, police have stepped up patrols across Carinthia. ORF TV specifically reports that a search was performed at the refugee center where the perpetrator lived.
The first witness was also questioned. The investigation was carried over by officers from the state’s protection and extremist offices, along with the state’s Criminal Police Department.
After the crime, Carinthia fell into mourning. On social networks, the opinions of sad dols from all over Austria flow. All bars and restaurants around the Old Town Square were closed in Villach itself. A carnival event was held that day.
The attack came just two days after the car plunged into a crowd of protesters in Munich, Germany. It was announced on Saturday that at least 39 people were injured at the time, and that a 37-year-old woman and two-year-old daughter had passed away.
The perpetrator of the event was a 24-year-old Afghanistan, who probably worked for religious reasons. The man was arrested and he pleaded guilty.
Acute political response after the attack in Villach
The attack sparked a sharp political response, including calls to strengthen transition policies and security. Home Minister Gerhard Kerner (OEVP-Austrian People’s Party) announced he will be coming to Carinthia on Sunday.
Karint’s governor, Spoo (Austrian Social Democrat), Peter Kaiser, denounced the attack, saying, “This unimaginable cruelty must have the most strictest consequences.” He emphasizes that all people living in Austria must respect the laws and values that are in effect in this country, and those who break them should be charged, imprisoned and deported. He also called on Austria and the EU to implement stricter immigration policies, arguing that existing proposals should be implemented at the European level.
The leader of right-wing FPö (Austrian Liberal Party) also responded firmly, claiming that the attack was the result of Austria’s asylum policy. He said FPö had long warned against security threats, “suggesting an immediate ban on the use of asylum and the deportation of consistent foreign criminals.”
