The European Union has a productivity problem: since 2000, it produces nearly 30 percent less output per hour worked than it would have if real output per hour worked had been growing at U.S. rates. The failure to nurture innovative start-ups into “superstar” companies is one of the reasons for the EU's sluggish productivity growth. At the root of the problem are Europe's fragmented economic and financial systems: without a more frictionless single market for goods, services, labour and capital, it becomes more expensive and difficult for successful start-ups to scale. On top of that, Europe's bank-based financial system is…

CNN — The oldest known plague victims in Europe date back about 5,000 years, but it was unclear whether two recent cases, one in Latvia and one in Sweden, were isolated sporadic cases or evidence of a more widespread epidemic. A new study based on ancient DNA recovered from 108 prehistoric people excavated from nine graves in Sweden and Denmark suggests that an ancient form of plague may have been widespread among early European farmers and may explain why this population mysteriously…
Intelligence on Russian subversive threats leads to heightened security at U.S. military bases in Europe
CNN — US military bases across Europe were placed on heightened alert last week for the first time in a decade after the US received intelligence that Russian-backed forces were considering sabotaging US personnel and facilities, multiple sources told CNN. Intelligence received by the United States suggests Russia has included U.S. military bases and personnel as options for proxy attacks, similar to plots carried out and thwarted across Europe in recent months, the people said. In April, two Russians of German descent were arrested on suspicion of planning bomb and arson attacks on US military facilities and other targets on…

This report examines student and parent perceptions and expectations at every point in the academic journey. When we analyzed why students choose higher education, the factors they consider when choosing which campus to attend, and what helps them find…
An intriguing new study suggests that drastic diet and lifestyle changes may not only prevent the cognitive decline associated with Alzheimer's disease, but may also bring some improvement to people in the early stages of the disease. The small, limited study differs from earlier findings that concluded that healthy lifestyle choices may lower risk but offer little hope of reversing the damage. The results have led co-authors of a paper published in June in the journal Alzheimer's Disease Research and Treatment to be more cautious and less excited. “It was quite shocking to me, frankly, that we could get significant…
The European Union’s capacity to produce 155 mm artillery ammunition may be less than half as large as public estimates by senior EU officials indicate, affecting the bloc’s ability to keep promises about supplies to Ukraine, Schemes and its partners in a journalistic investigation have found. The finding is a result of months of reporting by Schemes — the investigative unit of RFE/RL’s Ukrainian Service — and other outlets in a consortium of European media on shell production, a crucial factor in Ukraine’s defense against the Russian invasion. In addition to the capacity issue, interviews with ammunition producers, buyers, government…
