Landscapes of Terror: How Fear of Violent Conflict Influenced the Development of Non-State Societies in Ancient Europe
The impact of intergroup conflict on demographics has long been debated, especially in prehistoric and non-state societies. In their study, scientists from the Complexity Science Hub, the University of Washington, and the Leibniz Center for Archaeology believe that beyond the direct casualties of combat, conflicts can create “landscapes of fear” that can lead many non-combatants near conflict zones to abandon their homes and migrate. The Battle of Orsha by Hans Krell. “Around the world, scientists have extensively studied and debated the existence and role of prehistoric conflict,” said Dr Daniel Condor, a researcher at the Complexity Science Hub. “But it…
Google's new AI-based system for fielding questions before all-hands meetings is giving the company's leaders an easy way out, employees say. Previously, employees could post their own questions through an internal tool called Dory and vote for the ones they wanted answered at monthly staff meetings, known as TGIFs. Google executives, including CEO Sundar Pichai, would typically answer the questions with the most votes, Business Insider reported. But the process changed in April, and several anonymous employees told BI that the new system only asks simple questions. Google replaced Dory with a new AI-based system called Ask, which aggregates and…
Key Takeaways Nvidia is set to report earnings after the close on Wednesday, and investors are watching to see what the company's results mean about artificial intelligence (AI) demand. Quincy Krosby, chief global strategist at LPL Financial, said Nvidia's results could be seen as a “signal” for the AI spending outlook. Strong growth indicates robust demand for AI infrastructure, which could boost investor sentiment toward Nvidia, its partners and other companies in the AI space. Artificial intelligence (AI) chipmaker Nvidia (NVDA) is scheduled to report second-quarter results after the close of trading on Wednesday, and investors will be watching to…
When it comes to vacations, I was once a fervent believer in never going to the same place twice. Life is short, and airfare isn’t cheap, so why not see something new every time you go anywhere? So I embarked on our family’s recent two-week European escapade with an ever-so-slight indifference, seeing that the arc of our journey — Barcelona to Bordeaux to San Sebastian — covered grounds that we’d previously trod on past adventures. Of course, with so much to eat, drink, and experience, from tapas near the towers of Sagrada Familia to pintxos above the sun-soaked sands of…
Every game in Week 0 was much closer than expected. Florida State (-11.5) was the only team likely to lose, but Montana State won by 4 points instead of 12. SMU had to outscore Nevada 16-0 in the 4th quarter to beat Nevada by 5 points after being down 27.5 points. Hawaii beat Delaware State by 21 points instead of 39. Every current and former staffer guessed 2 of the 4 games, except me. I was 0 and 4. The commentators were 1-3. Now, I'm not sure how I feel about adding FBS-FCS games to this. Four of the SEC…
Apple shares have historically trended higher leading up to the tech giant's annual September product launch event. Now, the question remains: Will Wall Street be impressed this time by the new AI-enabled iPhone enough to allow the stock to sustain its recent gains? Apple has leaned heavily on AI optimism, rising 38% from its yearly low on April 19 to Tuesday's close, outperforming the S&P 500 by about 25% over the same period. Apple was able to outperform even as a three-week selloff from mid-July to early August sent the stock into correction territory as a rotation out of big…

Some may claim they have ADHD on the days when they have a bad day, can't concentrate, or forget things, but truly battling Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder involves a lifelong struggle with attention, organization, memory, and impulse control. “ADHD is not something that's more temporary,” explains Ali Tuchman, Psy.D., a psychologist and psychologist at the nonprofit group Support for Children and Adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (CHADD). “If you don't know what it is and you're not managing it properly, it can really impact your life.”Luckily, once you've been diagnosed with ADHD, he says, there are ways to manage…

AI darling Supermicro delayed its earnings release while coming under scrutiny from short sellers.
Supermicro shares fell by nearly a fifth on Wednesday, another dark day for the one-time booming AI darling. The drop came after the server hardware company delayed filing its annual financial report for fiscal 2024, which is often a warning to investors that a company may have significant financial, accounting or legal issues. Supermicro's management told shareholders that it needs time to complete an evaluation of its internal controls over financial reporting. A Supermicro representative confirmed to Fortune that the company will not file its 2024 annual report within the “stated time frame,” but gave no indication as to when…
