If you spend any time on social media in China, you've almost certainly come across the curious phrase “We're bringing you the trend.” The phrase is ubiquitous in reports about serious social injustices, such as companies deceiving consumers. It's shorthand for users' efforts to spread information rapidly to bring about social change. How it works is relatively simple: most Chinese social media sites maintain a list of “trending” topics – in theory a collection of the most popular and discussed keywords at any given moment, selected and displayed according to the platform's opaque algorithms. Entertainment news and gossip are usually dominant,…

The Democratic National Convention drew a large audience with prominent speakers and musical interludes that focused on unity and moving forward toward a more hopeful future. But the upbeat mood is overshadowed by divisions within the Democratic Party over Israel's war in Gaza, with some delegates calling on Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris to support halting U.S. military aid to Israel. While pro-Palestinian protests around the convention were much smaller than some had anticipated, Chicago police arrested at least 72 pro-Palestinian protesters on August 20, 2024. I myself have lived in a city. However, I think there is something strange about people who want to live in cities. I question their values. Do you know what I mean? That's total, utter, completely polished snobbism. It's like the polar opposite of Nellie Oleson's disdain for country folk. And, naturally, my feelings spill over into the realm of dog preferences: I…

Welcome to the Anthropocene: the historical period that scientists suggest may be marked by the ubiquitous presence of chicken bones, and where factory farms have surged past the environmental safety thresholds established by experts.About 11 billion chickens, 142 million pigs, 76 million cattle, 62 million sheep, 12 million goats, and counting: this is the population of invisible animals farmed in Europe every year that live and die on the (dis)assembly line.Intensive farming is the predominant method of producing meat, dairy products and eggs in Europe and elsewhere in the world. It is also recognised as one of the most polluting…

The open moorland of the Beacons Way in WalesTaking Friday off gave us 3 days of free time, so we had plenty of time to walk from Llangynidr to Abergavenny along the Beacons Way. It was amazing! On the first day we bought a return train ticket from Bristol to Abergavenny and then caught a local bus from Abergavenny to Llangynidr. We were one of 3 passengers and the driver was very friendly. On the first day walking we enjoyed open moorland, fern covered hills and beautiful scenery. After a night in Crickhowell we walked over 4 ridges to Llanthony…

Two years after saboteurs planted explosives on the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines that cross the Baltic Sea between Russia and Germany, suspicions are falling on more and more perpetrators.Immediately after the explosion on September 26, 2022, many Western experts blamed Russia. The theory is that Moscow blew up the pipeline as part of a “hybrid warfare” approach to demonstrate its willingness and capability to attack critical infrastructure, or as part of a “false flag” operation to smear Ukraine.Since then, journalists and commentators have pointed the finger at a range of culprits, including President Joe Biden,…

Whoever wins this November will bring an industrial policy for manufacturing to the US, but it won't be the same policy. The two candidates will use different tools and support different industries. The impact on agriculture will also be different.Industrial policy refers to government support and protection of particular industries through tools like tariffs, subsidies, and research. Washington policymakers used to ridicule it, believing that markets allocate capital better than governments and that free trade makes countries richer than protectionism.Of course, they didn't always practice what they preached. Rather than calling it industrial policy, they implemented, among other things,For housing, it's…
