Suicide rates among Asian American youth have risen sharply in recent years, with several subgroups appearing to be particularly vulnerable. A new study finds that while suicide rates have increased by 72% among Asian men and 125% among Asian women over the past 25 years, the situation is even worse for some Asian American minorities and Pacific Islanders, including Vietnamese American youth who face particularly high risk. On the surface, Asian American suicide rates may appear to be lower than other groups, said Anthony Bui, a professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine and an author of the…
According to a recent Forrester survey, more and more businesses believe their employees spend too much time searching for the information they need: 40% today, up from 19% just five years ago. This issue is driven by a variety of issues, including a distributed workforce, siloed technology systems, and massive data growth. But it doesn't have to be that way. Enterprise content management systems have come a long way in that same time period, and the introduction of new artificial intelligence technologies means employees can easily find and make the most of all the content their organization owns – text,…

Back to school is a busy time that kicks off after the summer holidays. There's a ton of things to do, like buying school supplies, back-to-school clothes, and packing back-to-school lunches, not to mention the high costs of back-to-school. On top of all this preparation, there's one other important thing you want to make sure your kids are exposed to: learning. Traditionally, teachers are prepared and have lesson plans finalized before the start of the school year. But some “unschooling” parents are taking education into their own hands with a non-existent curriculum, and they've shared more about their approach on…
Semiconductor manufacturer Microchip Technology announced that some of its production facilities had been affected by a ransomware attack. The US-based chipmaker made the confession earlier this week not through a press release, but by filing a document required by the Securities and Exchange Commission as it is a publicly traded company. The company acknowledged in mandatory filings that a ransomware attack earlier this month paralyzed its manufacturing operations and may impact future production. AUSTIN, Texas – The summer heat of August is upon us, but for Austin firefighters, responding to calls in the frigid cold can be a challenge. AFD Division Chief Eddie Martinez said the heat of the Texas summer means the heavy bunker gear creates even more dilemmas. “The gear that you wear when you go into a fire is very effective at protecting you from the heat, but it's also very effective at keeping the heat in,” Fire Chief Martinez said. Emergency workers warn of excessive heat Monday, August 19, was the hottest day so far this year in Central…

BRICS, originally made up of just Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, will need a new name. After 13 years without a new member, the international grouping of non-Western countries welcomed Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates last August. Since then, the doors have been open: In February, South African Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor claimed that more than 30 countries now want to join the international group. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is keen to join the bloc and has been lobbying officials from Russia, China and, this week, India about Malaysia's application. Thailand also…
