About Author Sandy Lo

Sandy Lo is a published novelist, journalist, publicist and songwriter from Staten Island, New York and now residing in Nashville, TN while working on her upcoming novel, “The Watch Dog”, a bit of a departure from her past romantically driven books. With this book, Sandy hopes to combine harsh emotions with a supernatural undertone.

The Watch Dog – Chapter 1

The Watch Dog – Chapter 1

A cigarette sat in a filthy ashtray in the tiny kitchen. Garrett Baker hung up the telephone with a sigh. His mother didn’t sound as pleasant as he hoped. They hadn’t spoken much in the past couple of years, and he knew she was ashamed of him.

At thirty, Garrett wondered how he managed to mess his life up this severely. He stared down at the one-way ticket to Nashville, Tennessee that his younger brother had sent him.

Garrett had no more excuses why he couldn’t come home for Thanksgiving. Money had been a common reason. Since dropping out of community college ten years ago, he hasn’t been able to secure a job; a legal one at least. He tried his hand selling various narcotics and running illegal poker tournaments in the basement of some dive bar in Hell’s Kitchen.

Karma came back to bite him every time, though. In the past five years, he had been arrested three times and his illegal operations were shut down. Luckily, the courts have been lenient and only gave him a slap on the wrist.

He had finally landed a job as a bartender at an upscale lounge on the East Side when he made a pass at a gorgeous redhead. Her boyfriend didn’t like that too much.

Before Garrett knew it, he was slapped with assault charges and sent to prison for eighteen months along with a hundred hours of community service. The judge no longer had sympathy for him, and neither did his public defender, Cara Benson, whom he had more than a professional relationship with.
Cara saw him as someone she could fix. He fed her so many lies, which he now knows is not the best idea to mess with the woman who can help you maintain your freedom. Garrett had slept around on her, used her for a place to stay, and on more than one occasion, verbally abused her.

Garret couldn’t believe what a disaster he made of things. He is lucky if he can get a job in food service or as a taxi driver with his record. From a young age, he was money hungry and treated people terribly—even his own family, especially them. He doesn’t claim to have a good heart somewhere deep down; he knows how callous he is.

Someone pounded at the door. Garrett put his cigarette out and pushed back from the table; the metal chair scraping against the worn, cracked floor shooting a chill through his body.

“Open up, Baker,” the throaty voice of his landlord barked.

Garrett groaned as he slowed his pace down. He ran an aggravated hand through his dirty blonde hair. When he finally opened the door, the landlord, who was short enough to be eye level with Garrett’s chest, shoved a paper into it.

“You’re out, Rett.”
“Pete, come on, you can’t do this to me,” Garrett pleaded.
“You’re two months behind on rent. Did you even find a job yet?”
“Look, it’s not easy. I’m going to see my mother—I’ll get the money from her.”
“I’m done,” Pete said with animated hands. “You’re not going to learn if people keep cutting you breaks.”
“Where am I supposed to go?”
“Maybe you should spend some time with the mother you keep mooching off of.”
Pete walked away before Garrett “Rett” Baker could say another word.
“Shit,” he hissed and crumpled the eviction notice in his hands.

Slamming his door shut, Garrett went into a rage. He tossed what little furniture he had. It hit him that he has nowhere to turn. He picked up his prepaid cell phone and called his parole officer.

“What is it now, Baker?”
“Paul, I need help, man. I just got evicted and I have no job.”
“There’s nothing I can do for you, I’m sorry. Apply to McDonald’s. I can hook you up at a shelter.”
“I’m not staying at no shelter,” Garrett snapped.
“I can pull some strings and allow you to leave the state.”
“What good would that do me?”
“Go home, Garrett, to Tennessee.”
“I am, for the holiday—I told you…”
“No, I mean permanently.”
“Paul, I’m not going back to that loser town.”
“Oh because you’re such a winner, right?”
Garrett was silent.
“Suck up your pride and face your family. They’re the only people you have left, if you’re lucky.”

With that, Officer Paul Johnson hung up. Just then, the lights went out in Garrett’s apartment.
Complete darkness. He sat there for hours, memories of his little town near Nashville, Tennessee swirling around his head.

“Rett, leave him alone!” Cori Davis yelled.

She was defending her younger brother, Mark. I was holding him down on the ground with my foot pressed to his face.

“What are you going to do, sit on me, Cori?” I laughed at her.

She was overweight and always a do-gooder. With me being the bad boy in town, we didn’t get along.
Mark cried from his spot on the ground.

“He’s got to learn to be a man and he sure as hell is not going to learn it from you or your mama the way you baby him. He needs to learn to fight back and your daddy’s not around to teach him.”
“Well, he wouldn’t need to learn if you’d stop picking fights with him!”

Cori tried to push me off of Mark and I pushed her back. She fell to the ground with a thud. Her round face with her big brown eyes looked at me with raw hatred, and for a moment, I felt bad. Cori stood up, awkwardly trying to push off her weight.

“You think having your daddy made you so much better, Rett?”

I could vaguely hear Mark quivering underneath my foot.

“Cori, don’t…” he stammered.
“He’s an abusive alcoholic who messed you up!”

I lifted my foot off of Mark and spit in Cori’s face. I could tell it took everything inside of her not to burst into tears.

“Rett, come on!”

I turned around and my girlfriend, Shelly, was standing by my car. Her wavy brown hair was being twisted between her fingers.

“Leave fatty and her brother alone,” she smirked over at Cori before looking back at me.

I didn’t even bother looking back at Cori and Mark Davis before walking over to Shelly to greet her with a kiss; the kind of kiss no parent would approve of their sixteen-year-old child performing.

Garrett grabbed his jacket and left the apartment. He roamed around the neighborhood, not sure what he was searching for; an opportunity to fall out of the sky maybe. He knew that wouldn’t happen though. No opportunities that wouldn’t land him back in jail were just going to fall into his lap. He was stuck—even if he did get a minimum wage job, he couldn’t make rent anywhere in Manhattan. Not even in his boxlike apartment in a project building in the worst neighborhood.

Drug deals were happening on every other corner. Arrests were happening on the corners in between those deals. Garrett could get back into something illegal in the blink of an eye, but jail time is not something he could take again.

Being a Southern white boy in a mostly black and Hispanic prison, Garrett wasn’t the tough guy with the rugged good-looks anymore. He was a “honky hick” who would get his jaw unhinged if he even looked at the other inmates a second too long.

And that almost had happened—twice. The first full night of sleep Garrett was able to get while he was serving time was when he wound up in the hospital for a fractured jaw.

The second time wasn’t nearly as bad—the injury hadn’t completely healed from the first break. He was already numbed with painkillers. They were the best part of the experience. The medication made him fuzzy and even delusional at times—mostly at night.

He would dream about his childhood. Sometimes he was reliving the beatings his father had given him and his brother. Other times, he was at his grandmother’s and smelling his favorite cherry cobbler. It had won awards at the state fair.

It was thoughts like Granny’s cobbler that brought a smile to Garrett’s face, and made him think going home wouldn’t be all that bad. Then he remembered how hard he tried to escape Cayuga, Tennessee. He didn’t want to end up some small town nobody working on some tractor. To him, the South was made up of simple minded people who settled for less because they couldn’t do better.

There was another reason Garrett did not want to go home. Cayuga represented the childhood he wanted to forget.

I Fell For A Reject!

I Fell For A Reject!

Photo by Kindell Brinay / Soundberry Design

Yes, I confess–in the past 48 hours I have fallen in love.  It’s like a dirty little secret I can’t hide any longer.  Surely, I’ve been in like with this reject for about ten years when he explained how he was crushed by a former love on the “American Wedding” soundtrack.  I was motivated by him when he told me to move along, but yesterday, it all changed when Tyson Ritter walked into a coffee shop in Nashville.

Before I knew it, [Tyson Ritter] offered to put me on the guest list for his show the next night!

As most know, I’m kind of a jill of all trades–novelist, journalist, publicist and yes, barista.  Well, imagine my surprise when my eyes met Tyson’s as he stood on line to get his green tea latte.  Instantly, I recognized him–I had even met Tyson and the other All-American Rejects in a press room a few years ago, but now, here he was while I donned an apron ready to take his order.  I figured it would be all business.  He’d tell me the details of his beverage.  I’d ask if he’d like anything else.  We’d finish the transaction and I’d say “That lead singer of The All-American Rejects is just a normal guy.”

Well, Tyson Ritter is anything but normal, and I mean that in a good way.  After I took his order, the beautiful-eyed, smooth voiced, talented man asked me about my plans to watch the Super Bowl.  We made small talk back and forth.  Before I knew it, this guy offered to put me on the guest list for his show the next night!  Incredibly sweet, right?  But I don’t think that was even the moment I got in too deep.  No, it was the next night at Exit/In in front of thousands of AAR fans who had long ago fallen completely head over heels for Tyson Ritter.  Who could blame them?  I don’t know how I didn’t succumb to his powers before.  Then again, this was my first Rejects concert…I never threw myself into the belly of the beast until now.

My plus one, Kindell, and I quickly realized what we were in for when the band took the stage.  Nick Wheeler, Mike Kennerty, and Chris Gaylor make up the rest of the band and are all incredible musicians; I can’t fail to mention that.  The sound was practically flawless.  Tyson was the perfect entertainer.  He sang–not just screamed–rocked the guitar, and spastically danced around the stage, which seemed to make the audience feel comfortable doing the same!

The sold-out crowd sang along to hits like “Swing, Swing”, “Dirty Little Secret” and “It Ends Tonight”, but even songs that weren’t singles received just as much attention.  The band’s newest release, “Beekeeper’s Daughter” was definitely one of the favorite songs of the night.  I wound up downloading the song as soon as the show was over.  “Beekeeper’s Daughter” is now available on iTunes and will be on the band’s upcoming album Kids In The Street.  AAR debuted the song of the same name for us, and we were hungry for more.

One of the biggest highlights of the show was when the band performed “Move Along”.  Tyson got so into the song that underneath all of his jokes, and crazy-eyed looks, lies a true artist with plenty of heart.  I mean, who else offers their barista free tickets?  Come on now!

What better way to end the show than to perform “Gives You Hell”, the ultimate hate anthem that’s catchy enough to make you feel good about singing it.  To be honest, I can’t remember the last time I went to a pop/rock/punk show and truly loved it from beginning to end.  I have seen a lot of concerts over the years with StarShine Magazine, but The All-American Rejects really proved to be something more than I ever expected.

Like I said earlier, I was always in like with AAR, but now…I fell in love with a bunch of rejects, and I’m really okay with that.

I hope somewhere Tyson Ritter is reading this, and appreciates my opinion as both a journalist, and now, as a big fan.  Thank you for hooking me up!

Nick Carter Puts His Space Suit On…

Nick Carter Puts His Space Suit On…

The line to get into the Cannery Ballroom in Nashville was wrapped around the building.  Girls were dressed in flashy sequined outfits while some guys were simply dressed in a Backstreet Boys t-shirt.  Yes, guys were in attendance–some even straight!  107.5 The River hyped the show for several months, especially on-air DJ, Intern Adam, who came out on stage that night with one of Nick Carter’s biggest fans to announce him to the stage.

Before Nick hit the stage, though, the crowd fully welcomed his opening act, Guinevere.  She performed with two back-up dancers and showed off her moves along with her vocal chops.  Pumping out cover songs of pop queen Kylie Minogue’s “Can’t Get You Out Of My Head” and Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ On A Prayer”, Guinevere had the crowd singing and moving along as if they’d known who she was prior to the show.  Original songs like “Crazy Crazy” and “Liar” also had the crowd going wild.  ”Crazy Crazy” can now be requested on radio.  Hopefully we’ll hear from Guinevere in 2012.  Check her out at: www.thisisguinevere.com.

As for the main event, Nick Carter came to the stage with theatrics that no fan of his was surprised by.  He has always been fascinated by aliens, and in honor of that, Nick made his grand entrance wearing a space suit complete with helmet and American on his sleeve.  Even his band members donned similar costumes.  Fittingly, Nick began the show performing “I’m Taking Off”.  The song is not only the title of his latest solo album, but also the name of the tour, which runs through February 12th before he hops back on the NKOTBSB tour this spring.

Nick mixed into his stage show some of his own guitar playing, a few dance moves, and gyrating for his screaming fans with the tease of taking off his shirt throughout the night.  He surprisingly only sang three songs from his 2002 debut album, Now or Never, and filled the rest of the show with his newer songs, a couple of rock covers and a few BSB songs.  The entire show was full of energy and Nick’s vocals were on point throughout–whether he was belting it out or seducing the crowd with toned down notes.

The biggest highlight of the night was Nick’s intimate performance of “Falling Down”.  He played acoustic guitar with no other musical accompaniment but his voice, and the audience–if Nick didn’t own them already–were now his.  Other songs like “Do I Have To Cry For You”, “I Got You”, “Burning Up” and “Just One Kiss” had everyone screaming, dancing and swooning all at once, it seemed.

It was nice to see how Nick Carter has really grown into a confident music artist, both on his own and within the Backstreet Boys.  What’s just as nice is how fans and media have been receiving him with open arms.  (Journey pun intended.  After all, they are Nick’s favorite band.)

A huge thank you to Intern Adam at 107.5 the River for hooking me up!  Follow him for all the juicy entertainment info and great laughs at: www.twitter.com/internadam.

Flashback Journal: My First Big Backstage Experience

Flashback Journal: My First Big Backstage Experience

Sandy Lo with Aaron Carter backstage in 2002.

On January 29, 2002, exactly 10 years ago, I received my first press pass to a concert for StarShine Magazine.  It was to an Aaron Carter concert in Albany, New York and I will never forget that experience.  Everyone told me I would never be able to get a press pass, but I did.  I was extremely excited, nervous and green about it all.  I had no idea what I was doing.  I was a teenager, but I was driven and wanted to prove myself as a journalist…eventually I got the hang of it.  This is still one of my favorite journal entries I wrote though, in spite of my overzealous fandom!  Enjoy!

Let me just say that this was a dream come true for me—to hang around and talk to people in the industry and be taken as a serious journalist…Wow.  I was so amped up and nervous that I got to the Pepsi Arena at around 2. The opening act I was interviewing, Lindsay Pagano, wasn’t arriving till 4. So the tour production people sat me outside her dressing room where they guaranteed me “plenty of action”…and oh were they right!

The first person I see is Jane Carter. She walks out and asks me, “Do you know where the production room is?” Oddly enough I had just come from there so I gave her directions and she thanked me. Moments later Lindsay Pagano’s dancers arrived. They let me sit in the dressing room with them and we were just gabbing away!! They were cracking me up. I asked them if any of Aaron Carter’s sisters were with him and they said there is this one girl with long dark brown hair who’s tall and skinny…so of course I assume Angel, and I was right. She walked by and just smiled at me. I think she knew I was an Aaron fan because I guess my face showed it all every time her or Jane walked by. I saw Bob (Aaron’s father) a few times too.

Anyway so finally I get the nerve to go up to Angel and ask for a picture. She was nice about it. A little while later Lindsay’s dad and little sister got there and they are so nice! We were all talking in the dressing room when this little puppy peeks it’s head in! I of course “awww” and when my eyes follow the leash up to its owner, I realize it’s Aaron with Angel next to him! He walked away too quickly so I didn’t get to even make eye contact. Later on I got to pet the puppy, who is mostly wolf!

Pretty soon Lindsay arrived and we began our interview, which went extremely well! Before hand, her little sister says to Lindsay, “Did you know she’s a big Aaron fan?” I blushed and Lindsay was like “Really? Aww! You want me to introduce you?” I nodded insanely and she giggled. She then says, “I think he’s doing sound check. I want to see it. Do you want to come?” Of course I wanted to see Aaron’s sound check!

So Lindsay, her sister, her dancers and I walk over to the stage area where Jane is watching Aaron from one of the seats. We all sat in the front row and sang along. Aaron kept looking over at me like he was trying to figure out who I was. Throughout sound check he was goofing around, making weird noises and doing his Donald Duck impersonations.

After that, we went back to Lindsay’s dressing room. Aaron was walking down the hall and I tapped Lindsay “Aaron Aaron…”. Haha! So Lindsay yells out to him, “Hi Aaron Carter!” in a goofy voice. He replied, “Hi Lindsay Pagano” in the same goofy voice as he waved and went into the dressing room.

Next was Lindsay’s turn for sound check. I sat and watched with her sister. Of course who comes and sits a few chairs away? AARON! For some odd reason he was holding a hub cab…I assumed he didn’t steal it, haha.

After Lindsay’s sound check we headed to catering. I ate lunch with her and her family and Jane Carter was also eating. She kept staring at me. (Author’s Note: I’m sure she wasn’t too keen on a fan/journalist hanging around backstage at her son’s concert all day, but I didn’t know proper etiquette back then and this was a chance of a lifetime for me!)

Soon it was time for Lindsay to get ready to go onstage. I’m waiting outside her dressing room with her father when I see Aaron coming down the hall! Her father was like “Go, go!” So I start walking down the hall, trying to be casual, knowing this was my chance to meet him.
When I got up to him, I said, “Hi Aaron, my name is Sandy from StarShine Magazine.” He replied with, “Hey what’s up?” He kind of looked at me like “Oh so that’s who this girl is!” lol. Then I asked him to take a picture and for a few autographs for the magazine. I told him that I’d really like to do a feature on him in my magazine and he said “Cool” and wrote down an email address to contact. “You can talk to my manager,” he says just as I respond with, “Your mother?” He laughed and said, “Oh yeah that too!”

After leaving Aaron, I see Jane and I give her all my contact info on a sheet of paper. (Author’s Note: Real professional of me, huh? Luckily I got real business cards after this event!)

I finally started seeing Dream Street members walking around. They had a signing at a mall so they didn’t have sound check. We all made our way over to the stage area next. Aaron and his dancer were playing basketball and the ball rolled over to me so I passed it back. I was talking to Lindsay before she went onstage and she told me she was nervous. Aaron must have overheard and walks over to us and says, “You’re nervous? Aww, I feel ya!”

He starts telling us this story about when he was six and he was doing a “confort”…lol. He looks at me and says, “I can’t talk”. “You mean concert?” I asked, and he laughs and says “Yeah, that’s it!” So the story was that he was so nervous that he fell and chipped his tooth. Lindsay didn’t feel like his story made her feel less nervous and we all laughed and she said, “Thanks, I’ll be sure not to do that.”

I asked Aaron if he’d be willing to do an interview tonight and he said “That’s the man you got to speak to.” pointing to his road manager. So I thanked him and walked away. I asked the manager about an interview and he said there was no time for tonight but we can try to schedule a phone interview. I talked about it to Jane too, so it’s all good.

(Author’s Note: Wrong!! It wasn’t all good by any means. Following this concert, a history of me getting turned down for interviews while Jane was managing Aaron ensued! It took me over 2 years to get an interview and that was after Jane stopped managing Aaron! It makes for a funny story though and funny enough, I still work with Aaron and keep in touch with the Pagano family and members of Dream Street! Anyway, back to the story…)

I watched the whole show from the side of the stage. Everyone was great! Aaron posed for pictures for me during the concert!

After the show, I was standing by the wall and Aaron was walking by and I told him “great show”. He thanked me and hugged me while Jane gave me a dirty look. I just didn’t understand why she didn’t like me. (Author’s Note: Apparently she thought I was some stalker from Tampa, Florida named Monica??? She didn’t take me seriously as a journalist. In hind sight, I can understand why. Still, I was no threat to her son.)

After that, I got to interview Chris Trousdale from Dream Street who is super nice! (Author’s Note: Who would have thought I would end up being his publicist at some point? Lol.)

I said goodbye to Lindsay, the Pagano family & the dancers, before saying goodbye to Angel and the puppy, Akia. I didn’t get to say goodbye to Aaron but the hug was kind of that, so it’s all good. I so had the best night of my life! Spending 8 hours backstage was incredible!

The Watch Dog – Prologue – Full Novel Due 2012

The Watch Dog – Prologue – Full Novel Due 2012

The barking was echoing through my skull; the low growl ringing in my ears in between the bellowing howls. I sprang up in the bed forgetting where I was. My eyes adjusted to the moonlight from the window. I ignored the sleeping girl next to me and slithered out of the bed.

I searched my clothes out on the hardwood floor and dressed quickly. Slowly and quietly I walked to the window and looked down the peaceful block tucked away in the Hamptons. There were a few mansion-sized houses on the street and many trees in between them.

Seeking out the source of the barking, I glanced up and down the block. The cold glass of the window pressed against my body as I leaned closer.

Stupid stray dog.

The barking had sounded as if it was right next to my ear. The sound was familiar and I couldn’t figure out why.

Growing up, I never had pets and I was not an animal person by any means. There was only one dog I had ever liked and she had passed away over fifteen years ago. I began to wonder if the girl I went home with had a massive dog; an extremely protective dog who didn’t like me in her bed. Fearful of my possible revelation and also cowardly, I left the house quickly. The dog was merely a deranged excuse to ditch the girl before she awoke. I didn’t leave a note or my number. I doubt she caught my name and if she did, she probably didn’t remember it. Damned if I knew her name…

Sandy Lo has made it known how much music has influenced her characters and plots.  To emphasize that, she is including a list of songs she listened to while writing THE DREAM CATCHERS SERIES, which ranges widely from 30 Seconds To Mars to Miranda Lambert.  To make this collection even more special, singer/producer Jeff Timmons, of 98 Degrees fame, has written the forward.  “Jeff Timmons has been such a big supporter of everything I’ve done over the years, just like I’ve been a huge fan of his,” says Sandy.  “To have him enjoy my novels as much as I enjoy his music blows my mind.  I’m honored to have him write the forward to THE DREAM CATCHERS SERIES.  He’s an amazing person and a gifted entertainer.” (Check out Jeff Timmons’ video message he made for the Dream Catchers book release party: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8yjxOvsnu4)

Currently, Dream Catchers and its sequel, Breaking The Moon are available on Amazon.com & Lulu.com in paperback and Kindle formats while Expressions is only available for Kindle/Ebook.

The series followed up the success of Sandy Lo’s debut novel, LOST IN YOU which she states in the acknowledgments was heavily influenced by her love for Timmons’ group, 98 Degrees and Backstreet Boys.

Lo announced earlier today on Facebook/Twitter that LOST IN YOU is now receiving distribution at barnesandnoble.com, Nook, and the Apple store.  “Being a self-published author is not exactly a straight shot to the New York Times Best Sellers’ List, as you can imagine,” Sandy explains.  “But I’m willing to work my way there, one sale at a time.  I’ve wanted to get my books on Barnes & Noble for a while, and with LOST IN YOU, that’s finally happened.  Hopefully THE DREAM CATCHERS SERIES will follow suit,” she says.  “I’m just thankful for every person willing to give my books a shot.  The support I have from friends, family, fans and some awesome entertainers is amazing and I appreciate every opportunity I’ve been blessed with.”

"Breaking The Moon" Released April 2011.
