Gomel regional authorities have sent instructions to workplaces on how to use screens open to the public, the independent Belsat portal reported, citing research on the Flagstok website.
Belarusian authorities ordered televisions, news panels and other electronic devices to be disconnected from the internet. The order was issued just before Belarus' scheduled presidential elections. These are scheduled to take place in January and will be the formal process for the “re-election” of Alyaksandr Lukashenko, who has ruled the country since 1994.
The portal recalled that Lukashenko recently publicly stated that if necessary, he would order a complete shutdown of the Internet in Belarus.
The dictator then referred to the protests that took place during the last elections in 2020. Citizens subsequently complained about problems accessing the network. The head of state said the internet could be shut down if the violence repeats.
Belarus. The screen has been disconnected from the internet. Fear of another rebellion
The media said switching devices to offline mode could also indicate that authorities fear a repeat of the situation from February this year. And on the second anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya's declaration was broadcast on information screens in the Minsk metro.
The hijacking of advertising and information screens was supposed to be possible thanks to the Internet connection.
