This relates to Macron’s remarks during a meeting of ambassadors in Paris. He said his country was right to intervene militarily in the Sahel, a region south of the Sahara that has traditionally been France’s post-colonial sphere of influence. He added that African leaders had “forgotten gratitude”.

France began withdrawing troops from Chad in December after local authorities abandoned a defense cooperation agreement. Chad had previously been a key ally of the West in the fight against jihadists in the region and in the last Sahel province where French soldiers were still active.

Earlier, France withdrew its soldiers from Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger following a series of military coups and rising anti-French sentiment in the region. President Macron said on Monday that the realignment of French forces in the region was a Paris decision.
