Living in Southern California, and especially Los Angeles, has many benefits. It's a beautiful place, and the weather is often very nice. But living in Los Angeles can also be very expensive, even for professional athletes. Joe Alt, a rookie offensive tackle for the Los Angeles Chargers from Minnesota, spoke to Up & Adams about his experience living in Los Angeles so far.
“The biggest thing for me is I'm a Midwest kid,” Alt says, “so LA is a little different. You get used to the cost of everything, the lifestyle. Transportation is a little different. I'm used to going five miles in five minutes. Not 25-30 minutes. You get used to that sort of thing.”
Alt was selected fifth overall by the Chargers in the 2024 NFL Draft. The Notre Dame product has the potential to be a star offensive tackle at the NFL level, and Los Angeles will be counting on him to protect quarterback Justin Herbert at a high level for years to come.
However, Alt is clearly still getting used to life in Los Angeles. That said, he later stressed that there are positive aspects to life in Los Angeles.
“I can't complain, because LA is beautiful,” Alt continued.

However, Alt was later asked by Up & Adams host Kay Adams to further explain his comments about the high cost of living in the city.
“Not one thing…the rent was kind of interesting,” Alt said. “I didn't expect it. Being from the Midwest, I was like, 'Wow!' It was a little more expensive than I expected. You pay for what you see. You've got the ocean on one side and the mountains on the other. You couldn't ask for a better area geographically.”
Alto will get used to life in Los Angeles. It will certainly be a long adjustment period, but I'm sure he will fit in well. His main focus now is preparing for the 2024 season with the aim of playing a big role for the Chargers.
