In two weeks, about 100 people will scale the Czech Republic's highest peak in a bid to break the so-called dry season swimming record. Wear only shorts and pack warm clothes in your backpack.
The Czech Mountain Rescue Service (HS) therefore called on project participants to consider whether they are adequately prepared for such extreme risks. Rescue workers said it was not a dangerous endeavor for people accustomed to cold temperatures, but they feared that people would take part unprepared after the information was posted online.
Sinieszka. An attempt to break a record in dry winter swimming. Service call
Karkonoska Grupa HS spokesperson Marek Frisch said rescue teams would intervene if necessary, but this could prolong the time needed to rescue others. He says winter swimming, even in cold, dry weather, is safer than in rain, snow, wind and temperatures around zero degrees.
The winter entry route is 9 kilometers long and has an elevation gain of 800 meters. Organizers Dominique Lux, a trainer who holds the winter dry swimming record, and Ribor Matus, a cryotherapy trainer, insist that rescuers are not needed. They want to minimize risk and take only those who can withstand extreme conditions into the mountains. In case of crisis, test participants should carry warm clothing and sleeping bags. Parents will accompany the record update group. We all drink warm ginger tea.
