A New York court is scheduled to announce its verdict on Friday in the case of Donald Trump on paying for the silence of pornographic actress Stormy Daniels. The US president-elect on Wednesday asked the Supreme Court to stop further proceedings in the New York court. According to lawyers, this could limit his ability to prepare for office.
“The (Supreme) Court must immediately stop further proceedings in the New York court to avoid serious injustice and harm to the office of the President and the operation of the federal government,” the court wrote in a letter released Wednesday.
Donald Trump’s lawyers have requested that the case be suspended pending the consideration of his appeal regarding the president’s immunity. Judge Juan Mercan previously ruled that Trump does not enjoy immunity until he is sworn in as president of the United States. However, he emphasized that he does not intend to impose a prison sentence or fine on the president-elect.

Trump’s lawyers argue that just being convicted of a crime would have serious consequences — they also point to a previous Supreme Court ruling that granted Trump and other presidents broad immunity from prosecution for actions they took while in office.
The Supreme Court ordered the prosecutors to respond to the defense request by Thursday morning.
Revenge for silence
Trump tried to hide a $130,000 hush-hush payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels before the 2016 presidential election, according to New York prosecutors. The woman claims she had sex with Trump in 2006, which he denies.
