In the week before the US election, the FBI thwarted an Iranian attack on Donald Trump, Reuters reported, citing information from the US Department of Justice. The attacker is likely currently in Iran.
According to information from the ministry, in September 2024, an anonymous Iranian Revolutionary Guards officer ordered Farhad Shakeri to track down and kill the Republican presidential candidate.

The client, who was convinced that Mr. Trump would lose the election, said that if the order could not be completed before the election, it should be done later, when protections for the (losing) candidate would be less stringent. Mr. Shakeri reportedly assured the FBI that he had no intention of presenting a plan to kill President Trump.

International Iranian websites claim that Shakeri is most likely in Iran and that two accomplices are being held in New York on charges of preparing attacks on Iranian opposition journalists in the United States.
Shakeri immigrated to the United States as a child but was deported in 2008 after being convicted of robbery and spending several years in prison. Contacts established within the prison allowed him to find potential contractors for orders from the Revolutionary Guards.

Attorney General Merrick Garland highlighted the threat Iran poses to key figures in American politics.
“The charges announced today expose Iran's continued brazen attempts to target American citizens and dissidents who criticize the regime in Tehran,” he said.
