At least 71 people have died in a tragic accident in Ethiopia. A car carrying wedding guests veered off the bridge and plunged into the river. Local authorities said many of the victims were related.
Ethiopia’s Sidama State Health Department announced on Facebook that the tragic accident occurred in Bona Zuria Woreda. Ethiopian journalist Eshete Bekele reported that a car carrying wedding participants fell into the Galana River.

It was initially reported that 66 people were killed and more than a dozen injured. Hours later, the death toll was determined to be 71. Sidama local government spokesperson Wosenyele Simion told Reuters the dead included 68 men and three women.
– Five people are staying at Bona General Hospital in critical condition, he said.

He confirmed that the passengers had just returned from a wedding and that many of the victims were blood relatives. In some cases, several members of the same family were killed.
The disaster occurred in Sidama region, about 300 kilometers south of Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa. According to local police, the car carrying wedding guests veered off the road at around 5:30 p.m. local time.

Wosenyele added that the car likely missed the bridge and went straight into the river. A similar case is not difficult, since in that area the roads are very winding and visibility is limited.
