European Film Awards 2024. In the most important category – European film – one of the most famous films of the year “Emilia Perez” by Jacques Audar was declared the winner. His creation was honored in the categories of European Director and European Screenwriter. Carla Sophia Gascon, who played the main role in Audiard's film, received the statuette of the European actress.
The European Film Awards (EFA) are awarded by the 5,400 members of the European Film Academy and are described as the European equivalent of the Oscars. They were first awarded in 1988, and until 1996, winners were awarded Felix statuettes. Since 1997, the awards have been “anonymous” and, as before, they have a form of recognition of outstanding achievements in European cinema.
Big win for Jacques Audiard
This year, the Academy changed the rules for awarding the awards, including opening the European film category to animated and documentary films. Therefore, in the 37th edition of the awards, the most important category included not 5, but 15 titles. This year's European Film Award went to the film “Emilia Perez”.
In the category of European director and European screenwriter, the legendary French director Jacques Audar won for the film “Emilia Perez”. Audiard was nominated for the European Film Awards for the first time in 2002 for the screenplay of the film On My Lips. Then, among other things, in 2005 and 2009, he was nominated for directing (respectively for “In the Rhythm of the Heart” and “The Prophet”).
When Audiard took the stage to receive his second prize, he joked: – Stop calling me Jacques Audiard and start saying Jacques Prize.
European Film Awards 2024 – winners
Carla Sofia Gascon, who starred in Audiard's film, won in the European actress category. Abu Sangare won the European Actor Award for his role in the movie “The Story of Solomon”.
Favorites appreciated
The 2024 European animated film Straum was directed by Latvian director Gints Zilbalodis. The European documentary was, as expected, We Want No More Land, directed by the Israeli-Palestinian team: Yuval Ibrahim, Rachel Szor, Basel Adra and Hamdan Ballal. Also winning the Favorite European Short Film category was The Man Who Couldn't Keep Silent, directed by Croatian Nebojša Sliepčević.
In the Discovery of Europe category – FIPRESCI Award, the winner of the Norwegian award is Halfdan Ulman Tondel, the creator of the film “Armand”, which is also Norway's nominee for the Oscar in the category of the best international film.
