Kochi: The rise in fatty liver disease due to alcohol consumption and unhealthy lifestyle habits was the main focus at a health conference themed ‘Liver Truths and Myths – Transforming Liver Health’ organised as part of the 32nd Annual Scientific Conference of the Indian Association for the Study of Liver (INASL 2024).The event was held at the CSM Hall, Le Meridien, Kochi and was inaugurated by Dr Matthew Philip, President, Indian Society of Gastroenterology (ISG).
Liver disease experts conducted several sessions during the conference, proposing strategies to improve liver health, with recommendations emphasizing the importance of abstaining from alcohol, maintaining a healthy weight, controlling sugar intake, exercising regularly and eating a balanced diet.
Dr Rajeev Jayadevan, Laboratory Director, IMA, Kerala, has denied the authenticity of homemade recipes being circulated on social media as liver detoxifiers, stressing that the liver has a natural ability to cleanse itself and avoiding toxins such as alcohol is crucial for liver health.
The meet featured inputs from eminent medical experts like Dr GN Ramesh, Organising Committee Chairman INASL and Principal Consultant, Gastroenterology, Aster Medcity, Dr Charles Panakel, Organising Secretary INASL and Principal Consultant, Liver Diseases, Aster Medcity, Dr Harikumar R Nair, Chief Hepatologist, Ernakulam Medical Centre, Dr Antony Paul, Chief Gastroenterologist, VPS Lakeshore, Dr John Menachery, Chief Hepatologist, Rajagiri Hospital and Dr Manju George, Chief Nutritionist, VPS Lakeshore.
Additionally, Ramesh Kanjirimadhom, Director, Seigen Design and Shefali Singh, Founder and Director, ‘Wellcon’ Wellness Convention also addressed the attendees and contributed to the discussion on liver health and wellness.
