TAMPA, Fla. (WWSB) – Facial matching technology used in the TSA's ID verification technology, combined with the keen eyes of Tampa TSA officers, led to the arrest of an individual attempting to use someone else's ID and boarding pass at security checkpoint at Tampa International Airport on Thursday.
TPA Transportation Security Officer Justin Causby was checking IDs at Airside A on Thursday afternoon when an individual inserted their driver's license into the verification technology, which then took a photo to match it with the ID presented.
After the machine displayed a mismatch error, Cazby manually checked the license and boarding pass, and quickly discovered the person was using someone else's documents.
TSO Causby immediately notified his superiors, who then referred the Tampa International Airport Police for further investigation, which resulted in the arrest of the individual.
The CAT-2 unit is fitted with a camera mounted on a tablet that is used to match the face of a person standing at a checkpoint with the face on a traveller's ID such as a driver's license or passport, improving security checkpoints' ability to detect counterfeit documents.
The system also checks the passenger's flight status by verifying whether they have a ticket departing from the airport on that day.
