Fedor Sandor took part in the battles of Ukraine and gave lectures to his students with weapons in hand. Now Volodymyr Zelenskyi, the President of the Republic of Ukraine, has appointed him as the new ambassador to Budapest.
On Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appointed Fedor Szandor, a professor of Uzhgorod University and a representative of the Hungarian minority, as the new ambassador to Budapest. Sandor gained fame by lecturing from the trenches during the battles with the Russians.
The nomination of Sándor, who speaks Hungarian and is familiar with the situation of the approximately 100,000-strong Hungarian minority in Ukraine's Zakarpattia, has been discussed for a long time, but no official decision has yet been made. For two years, the representative of Ukraine in Budapest was headed by the charge d'affaires Istvan Balogh.

He lectured from the trenches
Professor Fedor Sandor participated in the battles of Ukraine in a detachment of Hungarians from Transcarpathia. Last May, a photo of him was published showing him lecturing his students from a trench with a gun in his hand.
In early August 2023, his candidacy for the position of ambassador of Ukraine in Budapest was accepted by the then president Katalin Novak after several months of delay. Earlier, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary, Peter Szijjártó, also gave the green light.
It is not yet known when Sándor will come to Hungary to present his credentials to President Tamás Sülyok.
