Broken cable in the Baltic Sea (image photo)
A cable running along the Baltic Sea floor that provided Finland with energy connectivity has been severed. Mr. Fingrid and the country's prime minister assured that an investigation into the power transmission disruption has been launched. The cause of the failure is not yet known, but authorities have not ruled out sabotage.
Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo said on Wednesday that authorities were investigating a failure in an undersea power cable connecting Finland and Estonia, Reuters reported. An unplanned interruption in the operation of the Estlink 2 interconnector occurred shortly after 11:20 Polish time.
“Even on Christmas Day, the authorities are awake and investigating the matter,” Prime Minister Olupo wrote on social media. He added that the connection interruption did not cause problems with electricity supply to Finland. National network operator Fingrid also guaranteed this.
