FMI (Food Industry Institute) is committed to giving our members access to the latest information on how technology can aid in food safety efforts.
FMI's Food Protection Committee, for example, is an active community of food safety professionals focused on sharing best practices and improving food safety across the industry, said Hilary Tesmer, chief scientific officer and senior vice president of food and product safety.
“Research findings, regulatory activities and technological advances are shared through committee discussions, meetings, interactions with external experts from academia and industry events such as the SQF Unites Conference.”
Tesmer said FMI is also keeping a close eye on the federal regulatory environment.
For example, the Food Safety Modernization Act is groundbreaking legislation requiring multiple new regulations, and industry members are still receiving new FSMA rules and guidance documents that must be integrated into their Food Safety Action Plans.
Tesmer said there are several FDA initiatives planned for the year on nutrition labeling, as well as other initiatives underway, such as voluntary salt reduction: “We're working closely with the FDA on their Closer to Zero program, which focuses on heavy metals found in the environment, and the USDA has a major rulemaking coming up on Salmonella.”
