Former US President Jimmy Carter has been nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Speech Album. Carter, who is already in his 10th nomination, could become the oldest winner in the history of the award. He turned 100 last month.
On Friday, the Phonographic Culture of America announced the list of nominees for the most prestigious music awards in the world – the Grammy Awards. The 67th Grammy Awards will be held on February 2, 2025.
One of the nominations was given to former US President Jimmy Carter in the category of the best spoken word album (includes audio books, short stories and poetry).
“Last Sundays on the Plains: A Centennial Celebration” features popular musical classics such as “America the Beautiful” and “Amazing Grace” sung by Darius Rucker and LeAnn Rimes, as well as recordings of Carter's Sunday classes at his hometown Maranatha Baptist Church. from Plains, Georgia.

As CNN writes, the former president has a lot of competition. Barbra Streisand and Dolly Parton are also nominated in the same category, along with singer George Clinton and producer Guy Oldfield.
Carter received the award a month after his 100th birthday and is his 10th nomination for the prestigious award. If he wins the award, it will be his fourth in a lifetime. He previously won Grammys in 2007, 2016 and 2019.
Carter has a chance to be the oldest to win. The current record holder is blues pianist Pinetop Perkins, who won in 2008 at the age of 97.
Love, kindness, forgiveness and reconciliation
As stated in the press release for the album Last Sundays in the Plains: A Centennial Celebration, it was released in August this year by Virgin Music. It deals with themes of love, kindness, forgiveness and reconciliation.
“Let's celebrate and honor President Carter's extraordinary wisdom through the joyous power of music,” Kabir Sehgal, a longtime friend of the Carter family who composed the score, said in a statement following the album's release. “His teachings inspired us all,” he said.
Carter is the oldest US president. He survived brain cancer, liver cancer and a number of health problems, including brain surgery after a fall in 2019. In February 2023, he entered hospice care and is rarely seen in public.
However, in recent years, Carter has spoken about threats to democracy around the world. – I would like our presidential candidates to keep our country in peace and be defenders of human rights, environmental quality and equality, – says the 39th president in the album.
Carter is the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize (2002) for his efforts to promote peace around the world.
