German Finance Minister Christian Lindner was fired by Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Wednesday night. A vote of confidence in the government is also scheduled for January.

German government leaders harshly attacked Mr. Lindner in speeches. He said the finance minister had betrayed trust too often. “This makes it impossible for government to do any serious work,” Scholz said.

Prior to this, leaders of the SPD, Greens and FDP spoke for two and a half hours to discuss ways to overcome the coalition crisis.

Discussion centered on how to fill the $1 billion hole in the 2025 budget and get Germany's economy back on track.
Mr. Lindner intensified the conflict within the coalition government.
Some time ago, Lindner announced an “autumn of decision” for a coalition government, DPA officials recalled. His main focus was next year's budget, which was scheduled to be adopted by Congress on November 29.
He was also interested in strategies to pull Germany out of economic crisis. The proposals he presented met with significant resistance from the SPD and the Greens, intensifying the debate within the coalition government.
