German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier decided to dissolve the Bundestag. At the same time, the dates for early parliamentary elections to be held on February 23 were also announced.
The decision was announced in a statement broadcast on German media.
– Today, I have decided to dissolve the Federal Parliament and to hold early elections on February 23 next year. Mr. Steinmeier said the appropriate notification had been sent to the Speaker of the Bundestag.

– In these difficult times, stability requires an active government and a reliable parliamentary majority (…) According to the vote of confidence, the current government no longer has a majority. However, during the talks, the differently constituted governments failed to win a majority. Therefore, I am convinced that new elections are now the best path forward for our country's interests, he added.
Germany. Dates for early federal elections announced
The German President referred to the issue of early elections for the Bundestag and stressed that “the coming weeks must be dedicated to finding the best solutions to the challenges of our time.”
According to the politician, the most important issues that the new government will have to deal with are improving the country's economic situation, managing immigration and the future of the conflict in Ukraine.

On December 16, the Bundestag passed a vote of confidence in the government of Olaf Scholz, following the collapse of the SPD, Green Party, and FDP coalition government in early November after nearly three years in power. Without a parliamentary majority, the German Chancellor asked the President to dissolve the Bundestag.
The date for the early elections announced by Frank-Walter Steinmeier had already been set by the leaders of the SPD and the Christian Democratic Party parliamentary group.
