More than 50 people have been killed in a bus accident in the Guatemala capital. The vehicle fell from the bridge to the river from about 20 meters. Emergency Services reported that there could be a greater number of casualties as there were 75 travelers on the busy bus. Rescue operations are underway. “I match the families of the victims. Their pain is my pain,” said the president of Guatemala Bernardo Arevalo.
The bus carrying 75 passengers fell into the river from about 20 metres above the bridge,” Reuters said. The accident occurred Monday at Puente Belis Bridge, one of the key road intersections in Guatemala’s capital.
The mayor of Ricardo Quinonez, Guatemala, announced an immediate mobilization of emergency services. The final number of victims is yet to be known.
A spokesman for Firefighter Carlos Hernandez said so far the remains of 36 men and 15 women have been fishing. He added that the bodies were sent to a makeshift morgue created for the accident.

Preliminary information shows that emergency services can be a reason for a brake failure, but does not rule out drivers falling asleep while driving.

The president of Guatemala Bernardo Arevalo has announced his three-day national mourning. The Army and natural disaster agencies were sent to the scene of the accident.
“I coincide with the families of the victims who were woken up by a heart-wrenching message today. Their pain is my pain,” the social media president said.
