The world's largest crocodile died on Saturday in an Australian zoo. According to the estimates of his guardians, he was at least 110 years old. His health deteriorated in mid-October.
The reptile was called Cassius, it was almost 5.5 meters long and weighed almost a ton. This giant saltwater crocodile lived on an island off the coast of Queensland, Australia, since it was captured in the north of the country in 1980, recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as the largest crocodile living in captivity.
“He was an influential member of the family.”
His parents said goodbye to him in a post on social media, saying that “he was our dearest friend” and a “respected member of the family”.
The founder of the reserve, George Craig, bought this animal in 1987, reports the Australian ABC television. Center staff noted that Cassius felt a strong connection with his owner, because a month after Craig moved to the mainland, to Cairns, the elderly crocodile died. His health deteriorated on October 15. Friends shared their lives for 37 years.
When in the wild, Cassius was known for catching and eating livestock and destroying nearby boats.
